Tragically, in October 2004, Lieutenant (Navy) Chris Saunders lost his life while serving onboard HMCS CHICOUTIMI. To remember Chris and the sacrifice he made for his ship and his crew, the Lieutenant (Navy) Chris Saunders Memorial Hockey Tournament was established. This year marks the ninth anniversary of the tournament, which will be held from 11 – 14 April at both Shannon Park and Shearwater arenas. The tournament has tripled in size from its inception in 2004; it is now comprised of thirty civilian and military teams, some of whom travel from as far away as the UK, Germany, BC, and Atlantic Canada to participate in this anticipated and respected annual hockey event. The tournament plays host to excellent and spirited competition amongst four divisions (A, B, C, and +45), but the underlying importance is to remember the ultimate sacrifices that Chris and many CF members have made in Service to Canada. The tournament has undertaken numerous noteworthy charitable causes over the years whether to directly assist injured service personnel in financial need, or indirectly through the Military Families Fund, or like last year, and again this year through its affiliation with Make-A-Wish Atlantic Provinces, whereby a young girl’s wish to visit Disneyland will subsidized by tournament proceeds. This year, CSMHT will again partner with MAWAP for another great cause. While half of the tournament proceeds are channeled directly to local charities, the other half are maintained in a fund to be eventually distributed in the form of bursaries. Stay tuned for updates on this exciting new endeavor.

The 3rd annual Xmas Cup pitting the Royal Navy against their Senior Service rivals, the Royal Marines, will be played Thu 20 Dec 12 at the John Nike Leisure Centre at Bracknell, 1300 face-off.
The green machine has won the two previous encounters (13-7 in 2010 and 9-5 in 2011) in addition to never losing to the deep blue in the RN Championships since their inception 4 years ago. In fact, the marines have only lost one game against their navy opponents, a tight shoot-out loss at last year's Tri-Service Command Championships in Sheffield.
This year's fixture is moving to Bracknell for the first time and Royal Navy alumni players Alain Bernard and John 'Moose' Underwood have been given the task by RNIHA GenSec Adam Lappin to assemble the best of RN hockey past and present, inviting them to join their serving counterparts in a celebration of hockey in the Senior Service since 2006. It is also hoped that the game will showcase some new talent including Royal Marines Lee Duance and Tom Long, formely of the National Ice Hockey League (NIHL) Division One South Cardiff Devils and Chelmsford Chieftains respectively while the Navy is hoping to see the return of Jake Broad (formely of the Bracknell Hornets) and John Rutter (formely of the Bristol Pitbulls). Other alumni players returning to the ice for this special one-off fixture are Kevin 'Boz' Bozowskyj, Karl 'Sully' Sullivan and 'Big Mike' Allinson.
The game is expected to be a tight affair, the marines will be keen to use their superior fitness to force their matelots counterparts to fight for their first win at the Xmas Cup. |

Three Navy Teams Set to Compete for Tri-Service Command Title |

The Senior Service will be sending three teams to compete for the Tri-Service Command (TSC) title at the forthcoming HM Forces Championships in Sheffield 11-15 June 2012. The Fleet Air Arm, Navy and Royal Marines will all be making the trip North to Yorshire next month to take on teams from various RAF Stations and Army regiments.
Navy teams have faired well in this part of the competition; since the Navy began sending teams in 2006, it has never failed to have a team finish in the top three out of the ten to twelve competing teams from all three services. The Navy won the TSC for the first time in 2009 when the Navy team were victorious after three years of finishing third. The trophy would remain within the Senior Service the following year when Royal Marines won their first title. Last year, the Navy team finished runners-up to a highly favoured RAF Lossiemouth team.
In addition to the Command Championships, representative squads from each service will battle for the coveted Inter-Service title. The best from the Navy, Fleet Air Arm and Royal Marines will be selected to represent the Royal Navy against their air and land counterparts in the blue-ribbon event of the competition. The RN won back-to-back Inter-Service titles in 2007 and 2008, but since then has struggled to dislodge the RAF from the top spot. The Air Force has won 3 straight titles since 2009 and goes into this year's competition highly favoured again. |

Navy Players Make an Impact at Bristol |

The impact made by Navy players in their first year playing in the Bristol Pitbulls organisation in the English National League South was recognised at the end of season awards dinner.
Lt John Rutter, a pilot with the 845 Naval Air Squadron based at RNAS YEOVILTON, was selected as the Pitbulls defenceman of the year for the 2011-2012 season in his first season at Bristol. Rutter impressed coaching staff with his steady play which saw him finish the year as one of the most trusted members of the Pitbulls blueline team. 'JR' also managed 4 assists for 4 points, most of them obtained during a very busy and intense final stretch of the season when the Pitbulls were locked in a tight battle for position in Division II South. His calm and quiet demenour coupled with his dedicated work ethic also made him popular amongst his teamates who voted him their ‘Player’s Player’ of the year.
Another Navy player also made a subtle impact. Lt Cdr Alain Bernard, a hydrographic specialist working at the Defence Maritime Geospatial Intelligence Centre at the United Kingdom Hydrographic Office in Taunton, played a utility role throughout the season, splitting his time between playing a defensive checking role up front and filling in on defence when injuries decimated the back pairings. He also took on the role of one of the team’s alternate captains halfway through the season contributing a calming influence amongst the younger players in the dressing room. His contribution to the organisation merited him the ‘Manager’s Player’ of the year award. Bernard would also accummulate 5 goals and 7 assists for 12 points and at 42, Bernard was also the oldest player in ENL2 South during the 2012 season.
Both Rutter and Bernard were thankful to Bristol Manager Richie Hargreaves for giving service players a chance in his organisation. Both intend to return to the squad for the 2012-2013 season and hope to continue to contribute to the teams progress. After both ENL1 and ENL2 teams struggled in 2010-2011, Hargreaves managed to improve the fortunes of both sides in 2011-2012; the ENL1 side finished 6th and made the playoffs and the ENL2 side went from last to a respectable 8th place amongst 13, only 6 points off 4th place. |
